Everything changed for Josefa when someone gave her a Bible
Josefa has experienced more hurt than most people can even imagine. Abandoned by her prostitute mother when she was just 8 days old, Josefa struggled for most of her life to overcome crushing poverty, shame and hopelessness.
“I grew up with very painful hurt in my soul,” she says. “My classmates made fun of me. They said I should have never been born. I would ask myself, Why did I get such a hard life?” Josefa’s grief became almost overwhelming.
But then she was introduced to Jesus — and given a Bible by Spread the Word.
“I accepted Christ and felt my soul free of everything. I no longer let my past hurt me, because I not only look forward, I look to where Christ sends me.”
Giving a Bible can transform a young person’s life
Soon after Josefa found Jesus, she was given a Bible at the children’s center where hungry kids in her community come for free meals. Spread the Word offers a Bible to any child at the center who wants one.
“I’d never had a Bible and didn’t know what it was. I ran to my house, opened it and marveled, Here are all of the answers. Here is everything that will help me on my path.”
Josefa began reading her Bible regularly. It became her “book of help.” And as she grew in her faith, God’s Word inspired her to teach other kids about Him. “I would teach about all that God did in my life. That Bible is incredibly marvelous. It changed my life. Everything in there is true and real.”

Today, at just 15 years of age, Josefa is a gifted youth leader and fiery evangelist. She leads a Friday evening church service for children in her neighborhood and preaches the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever she goes.
She says, “I want others to know about Christ, what He did in my life and what He can do in their lives. I teach the youth that, in spite of our problems, we can always move forward.”
Josefa’s dream is to one day reach women who are trapped in prostitution, like her mom was. “They have a purpose in life,” she says, “And it’s Jesus who will help them.”
